The Old Town of Al-Dhahiriya
The Old Town of Al-Dhahiriya is considered one of the most prominent historical and heritage landmarks in southern Palestine. It includes 972 buildings of architectural and historical value, representing approximately 2.5% of the total number of historic buildings in Palestine. Initiatives by donors and the Municipality have contributed to the restoration of a number of historic buildings and public squares, transforming them into tourism-related facilities and services. The Old Town embodies the city’s deep-rooted civilization and its long history spanning successive eras. It is distinguished by its traditional urban fabric, composed of ancient stone houses, narrow winding alleys, and small courtyards that have long served as spaces for social interaction and daily life.
The Old Town holds significant historical and cultural value, as it stands as a testament to authentic Palestinian ways of life, traditional crafts, and the deeply rooted social relationships within the local community. It also includes a number of historic buildings and heritage sites that reflect the distinctive Palestinian architectural style and express the city’s identity and uniqueness.
Al-Dhahiriya Municipality gives special attention to the Old Town, recognizing its historical and human significance. The Municipality seeks to protect and preserve it through rehabilitation and restoration projects that balance heritage conservation with the improvement of living conditions for residents. These efforts contribute to revitalizing the Old Town as an active element in the cultural and tourism development of the city.
