Al-Dhahiriya Central Livestock Market

Al-Dhahiriya Livestock Market is one of the oldest and most significant agricultural markets in the southern part of Hebron Governorate. With a history spanning more than 130 years, it represents a deeply rooted economic and social institution in the city and serves as a cornerstone for supporting the livestock sector in the region.

Located within the boundaries of Al-Dhahiriya, at the heart of major livestock-breeding areas, the market enjoys a strategic advantage due to its proximity to breeders and production sources. It attracts farmers and traders from the city and surrounding villages, as well as from broader areas including the Negev, Galilee, Gaza, and northern Palestine. This wide geographic reach highlights its central role in livestock trade. Today, the market is considered one of the most important livestock markets in the West Bank, particularly because of the large number of experienced breeders who participate in it. It also plays a key role in influencing and determining livestock prices across the region.

The market is typically held on a weekly basis and becomes highly active from the early morning hours. Sellers and buyers gather to conduct transactions through traditional methods based on direct inspection and negotiation. Various types of livestock are traded, especially sheep, cattle, and goats, in addition to other animals depending on the season. The market serves as a primary platform for marketing local livestock production, contributing to economic circulation and strengthening farmers’ incomes.

Economically, the market provides both direct and indirect employment opportunities in transportation, brokerage, veterinary services, feed supply, and livestock fattening. It also serves as a major source of meat and animal products for residents of the city and nearby areas, particularly during religious seasons such as Eid al-Adha, when demand significantly increases. Livestock traded in the market is subject to oversight by the relevant authorities, especially with regard to veterinary inspections and health procedures, in order to ensure animal safety, prevent the spread of diseases, and protect public health.

As part of ongoing development efforts, Al-Dhahiriya Municipality received a grant from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to upgrade and modernize the market. The development included the establishment of integrated veterinary services, quarantine facilities, and feed storage warehouses, aiming to enhance organization, improve service quality, and support breeders and traders.

Despite challenges such as price fluctuations driven by supply and demand and the continued need for infrastructure improvement, Al-Dhahiriya Livestock Market remains a vital economic and social asset for the city. It continues to play a crucial role in sustaining the local agricultural sector and strengthening the livestock economy in the region.
